Great Autumn Hikes
At this time of the year, getting into the woods really shows off some of the best colors mother nature has to offer. I have enjoyed some great hikes in the Shenandoah Mountains, VA. There are plenty of places to stop and hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I really enjoy the views of the valleys. There are several orchards you can pick up, or pick your, own fresh apples.
Another great place to enjoy autumn is Leelanau peninsula in Michigan (near Traverse City). Not only as there great woods to explore but you also have the sand dunes (Sleeping Bear) which are huge! Best of all once you get over them you are rewarded with the shores Lake Michigan. For those who'd like a break from the woods, there are some local vineyards featuring warm spiced wine that can help shake off a chill from a day in the woods.
If your interested in great hikes and cool weather, fall camping, then Door County, WI is the place for you. There are two state parks, my favorite is Newport State Park. It's actually a wilderness park, so no crazy RVs with TVs. They have several miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, lots of miles of hiking and some great trails for off road bicycles. If your really brave, they also have winter campings, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, etc...
Does anyone have other Midwest Suggestions, I am always up for something new...
