I've never been. I just caught an episode of Globe Trekker and they highlighted some of the hiking and camping you can do there. The landscape was beautiful. A friend of mine recommends going in february.
Yeah it is beautiful country! If you go in February you'll be going for their summer. There most likely be any snow for boarding or skiing in the Andes above Santiago. The further south you go the more spectacular the landscape. Las Torres de Paine are, from what I've heard, some of the most majestic natural landscapes in the world.
