Rafting in Idaho
In more than 30 years of whitewater rafting, I rank the gorges of the Lower Salmon River in Idaho as one of the premier whitewater trips for families. This section of the river doesn't get the publicity of the Middle Salmon, widely regarded as one of the best rafting trips in America and the world. But the Lower Salmon has its own merits.
Its milder Class II and III rapids give youngsters plenty of action without worrying their parents. The many white sandy beaches resemble a Caribbean resort and make a natural playground for children.
The desert dazzles with brilliant colors. Sunsets glaze the hilltops in gold while shadows shroud the bottoms of the hills in hues of green.
Unlike other raft trips I've been on, wildlife teems in the Salmon and Snake River canyons. Golden eagles soar overhead. Mule deer graze in the meadows and bighorn sheep on the precipices. Chukars, partridges introduced from Pakistan as game birds, cluck obnoxiously from the rocks.
