Ho, ho ... hold your breath - Santa forsakes his sleigh for scuba gear in Oak Lawn
Many are accustomed to seeing images of Santa Claus standing amid snow-covered landscapes, flying high in a whirling snowstorm aboard his sleigh or quietly leaving footprints in the snow as he tiptoes his way across the roof of a sleeping family's home.
But for the dozens who came out to Oak Lawn's 13th annual Scuba Diving Santa Claus and Underwater Christmas Tree Decorating event, held Saturday afternoon at Oak Lawn Community High School, 9400 Southwest Highway, an entirely different image of St. Nick emerged -- or, rather, submerged.
Santa Claus, dressed from head to toe in his trademark red suit and armed with a candy cane-colored scuba tank, flippers and breathing apparatus, dove into the High School pool to decorate a small tree anchored at the bottom of the 14-foot deep end.
The event, which was organized by Chicago scuba diving clubs The Sea Deucers and Diveheart, gave the dozens in attendance a chance to help Santa decorate the tree with weighted-down ornaments and receive small Christmas prizes afterward.
