Camping... A sport?

When I seen the description of this forum, I thought camping.. Is that even a sport, so i'll have to ask... Is it?

Discuss?

I guess it's not really a sport but a lot of sports go along with it like hiking or mountain climbing. Maybe I should rename the forum... eventually I would like to have a separate forum for camping but not until we have more members and more posts.

This raises an interesting question, though. I guess camping might be a sport in the sense of 'physical competitiveness' (perhaps, against nature) for survival in the 'wilderness.' It really depends on how you define sport, though. Anyway, just a thought.

True! I guess some people consider bowling a sport but I don't really consider it much of a sport... so it really does depend on what you define a sport as.

So, is hillwalking a sport?

Or does it have to be hiking before it's a sport...

Or climbing before it's a sport?

How about calling them 'Activities'.

It's just sport without competition, unless you include competition with yourself - can I hike it quicker this time, can I camp more efficiently or more comfortably...

A lot of questionable things are sports. However I would more classify it as a hobby then a sport. Well car camping at least ... backpacking is still a sport (and involves lots of camping) :-)

hmm I guess I would call it a hobby/activity that one does while doing sports.

Fishing, Hunting, Hiking, Rock Climbing, Spelunking... Most of these will involve camping at some point.

I would have to say that it depends on the type of camping. If your referring to the camping that takes place while out hiking, or hunting, yes I would have to say it is a sport. Now if you are talking about getting a plot at a KOA, forgetaboutit!
